My strengths as
an essay writer are organization and strong support of ideas. I have a specific
“recipe” of essay structure I always follow. Introduction first, my arguments
and supporting ideas and finished with a conclusion. This structure guides the
reader to fully understand my thesis without getting lost along the way. I
believe that I have a clear voice within my essay. My writing flows, which
connects my supporting statements successfully. My voice helps to create a
strong support of ideas with confidence.
As a young essay
writer I still have some areas that need improvement. I have trouble with
tying all my ideas together to leave a lasting impact. My conclusions are
usually weak. I can easily sum up my essay but I lack a permanent punch. Once I
am finished restating my ideas I immediately get writer’s block when writing a conclusion. I find the last sentence of my essay is the hardest one to
write because it is the last chance for you to persuade your reader.
A goal I am
going to set for my next essay would be tying ideas from other paragraphs
together. I don’t want to limit an idea to one paragraph because the ideas
should relate and support one another. Some of my strengths include organization and
structure that I can sometimes be too good at.
By strictly dividing ideas and support to separate paragraphs, you can
lose the flow of the essay. My next essay I will try to create a combination of
ideas within the supporting paragraphs.
I totally agree! Conclusions can be really difficult because you want it to be one of the most memorable parts of your essay. If you ever get writers block with that again in future essay writing, I find that restating your thesis in a different way is really effective!
ReplyDeleteOrganization is a big part of a good essay and it is a great skill for you to have in essay writing! No one would like to read a sloppy essay, and you seem to have great organizational techniques. Have you ever considered sharing your "recipe" with anyone if they are having trouble? I bet it would be a lot of help!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that it is hard to leave that lasting impact of a conclusion for your whole essay. One thing that I usually try is getting help from a peer to formulate ideas to make it easier for you to get to that conclusion if you suffer from writer's block! This may also help with the overall structure of your essay aswell because that peer can proofread the entire thing.
ReplyDeleteI use the same structure for all of my essays as I also believe that organization is key to writing a strong essay. For conclusions I find that answering the essay question with a very broad answer is a good way to end the essay because it doesn't bring up any new information and shows that your essay remained on track with your original ideas.
ReplyDeleteIt's great that you've got a method that works for you but try not to adhere to it too strictly. One of the things you'll come to discover as you become a more sophisticated writer is that you should let your content dictate the form (or recipe) not the other way around.
